Corporate Social Responsibility
We are committed to responsible business with minimal impact on the environment
As an international and expanding business we recognise that we have a role to play in managing and meeting some of the challenges that we face as a society. We are committed to driving our business, and expanding our capacity pipeline, in a way that is responsible, ensures our own business sustainability and therefore meets the expectations of our stakeholders.
Our business strategy is centred on delivering high quality data centres that drive value for our customers. We fully appreciate that the growth of our customers’ operations and online activity drives our own expansion plans. Making sure that we meet their and our own high standards is fundamental to the way that we operate. For more information on our business model and strategy, please see our 2012 Annual Report
Business integrity
Maintaining high standards in the way that we run our Company is critical to the sustainability of our business. This means ensuring that the right management systems are in place in order to deliver value for all our stakeholders. This affects our relationships with suppliers; customers, industry organisations and colleagues.
Managing corporate responsibility
A key component of being a responsible business is understanding the issues that are most important to our operations – these are tied to our corporate risks and opportunities. Working with our stakeholders in 2011, we have identified our material issues to be:
- Carbon efficiency
- Customer satisfaction
- Employee engagement
- Accreditation on robust management systems
- Business integrity
We have set targets for the Group in all of these areas and are working hard to monitor, manage and improve our performance across these areas. A full update on our performance can be found in the Report of the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee on pages 52-53 of our 2012 Annual Report.
Environmental management
The nature of our business means that we are dependent on the use of energy. The growth of global internet usage and online technological capabilities means that this is a real opportunity for our development plans. However, we fully appreciate the wider environmental implications of increasing energy use.
We believe that the data centre industry has a role to play in creating a more energy efficient digital economy. Managing our environmental impact is a top priority for the business. We invest considerable resource managing our energy consumption and we continue to drive efficiencies in our energy management programmes Group-wide. For more information about this programme and some of the specific innovations we have developed at TelecityGroup see our environmental page.
Customer satisfaction
The growth of our business is dependent on our ability to satisfy our customer’s needs and we take this responsibility seriously. Customers are at the centre of our business strategy and as a result we monitor our performance in this area rigorously.
Our 2012 survey indicated that 97% of customers were either satisfied or very satisfied with the level of service that TelecityGroup provides around the world. We are committed to maintaining these high standards.
Employee engagement
We recognise that the skills, knowledge and commitment of our colleagues is crucial to our continued success and we work hard to ensure the wellbeing and development of all our employees.
We maintain high standards of health and safety across all our facilities with adherence to occupational health and safety standard BS OHSAS 18001:2007 which accredits those that demonstrate leadership in reducing risk and creating an injury-free workplace.
Our programme of engagement includes training and development initiatives including a Succession Planning Programme for the Executive Team, and community engagement opportunities.
We seek feedback from employees on an annual basis through our staff survey. Results for 2012 showed that close to 79% of overall respondents said that they “really enjoyed working for TelecityGroup.” Though a strong result, we are working hard on ways to improve this figure.
Community investment
As an employer we recognise the role that we play in local communities and the importance of supporting the communities in which we operate. Our people are incredibly passionate about the organisations that we support. As a business, our efforts are directed to organisations that work to promote education and opportunities for disadvantaged children and young people.
In 2012, we made over £182,000 of cash and in-kind donations to a range of organisations. Find out more about out charitable work.
